Tympanic
Membrane Temperature Probes
-
Central
body temperature registration by measurement of the ear
temperature
The D-TM1
probe series Tympanic Membrane Temperature Probes and Sensors
are designed for measurement of the
inner ear temperature, by physical sensor contact to the Tympanic Membrane.
This method to measure the ear temperature produces a fast and close correlation
to the body core temperature, and it is in particular
used during anesthesia to identify
malignant hyperthermia at
a earliest possible stage. Also used by Emergency Teams at
accidental hypothermia. Changes of the body
temperature is recorded immediately by measurement of the ear
temperature.
All other places for central temperature measurement, such as
esophagus, nasopharynx and rectum are reacting slowly with changes
of the body temperature regulation at the pituitary
gland.
The tympanic
membrane probe
is inserted in the cleaned ear and kept in firm position by
a piece of cotton around the electrode wire.
Outside the
ear, the wire is taped to the skin to assure a stable positioning
of the temperature sensor tip. Insertion must be performed with care, as the
tympanic membrane
is thin and woundable. The strength of the tympanic membrane can be very
variable. The measuring point of the tympanic
membrane temperature probes is shaped as a
small ball with a diameter of approximately 1 mm. It is located
in the tip of a 30 cm long electrode wire made by a very soft
and flexible silicone hose with a diameter about 1 mm.
The electrode
wire of the tympanic membrane probe is in a firm assembly junction connected to a
silicone cable with
the diameter
3,0 mm and a
length of 2,75 m.
The tympanic
membrane probes and sensors
are available with the most important connector types
“JK”,
“A”, “HP”, "SA".
Other connectors are available upon
request.
