EXACON Standard and Autoclavable Temperature Probes
and Autoclavable Temperature Sensors for Medical Use

Use and Maintenance

EXACON Autoclavable Temperature probes are designed for Steam Autoclave Sterilization at temperatures up to 134°C.

Using Central Temperature Probes
Introduce probe, e.g. into the esophagus, the nasopharynx, the auditory canal up to the tympanic membrane, or the rectum.
Use only water based crèmes for introduction.

Nasopharyngeal application
The correct position has been reached if you feel resistance when trying to advance the probe further.
Caution! Introduction of the probe may induce nose bleeding

Esophageal application
Introduce the probe until it is situated in the inferior quarter of the esophagus.

Aural application
Advance the probe until tip reaches the tympanic membrane. Wrap a layer of cotton wool around the cable to close the auditory canal.
Wind the electrode wires with a couple of turns around the outer ear to reduce heat transmission to ambient.

Rectal application
The probe is in correct position when it has passed the sphincter.
Use the disposable protective sheet type PC1 - It is LATEX free and have a thin layer of Vaseline for easiest introduction
.

Skin and Extremity Temperature Probes
Attach probe to finger or toe, using adhesive tape. Take care not to compress blood vessels. Furthermore secure lead
with adhesive tape. - Readout stabilizes within approximately 3 min.

Notice
Different parts of the body may differ significantly in temperature.
Monitoring temperature from two different sites, e.g. oesophagus and extremity, provides indirect information on the blood flow.

Cleaning Temperature Probes
Remove adhesive tape, use cleaning benzine to remove rests of adhesive. Clean with a cloth dampened with soap water.
Caution! Do not immerse connector in the cleaning solution.
The temperature probe can be cleaned with ordinary detergents either by wiping it clean with a soft cloth or machine washing
at e.g. 80ºC ~ 176ºF.

Disinfecting Temperature Probes
Without changing the features of the soft and smooth structure, the probes are accepting all generally applied  hospital disinfectants
such as ethanol, isopropyl alcohol or chlorite compounds.

Typical examples
Disinfect the cleaned probe with a disinfectant such as
A. Rodalon™, Cidex™.
B. 1 - 2,5% Formaldehyde solution.
C. 70% Alcohol, 0,5% Chlorexidine, 29,5% H2O

Steam Sterilization of Temperature Probes :
EXACON autoclavable temperature probes accept steam temperature up to 134ºC according the the attached User's Instruction

Chemical Sterilization
